My identity as an engineer

I am motivated by the opportunity to apply engineering knowledge to real projects and see how technical decisions affect the built environment. My studies at UTS have developed my knowledge of construction, infrastructure, sustainability and engineering design. I am particularly interested in linking this academic foundation with practical experience in industry.

My work as a surveyor has strengthened that connection. I have gained practical experience in cadastral, building, detail, identification and construction set-out surveys, including the use of total stations and GNSS equipment. I have also developed experience in field measurement, site levels, field sketches, survey notes and the interpretation of deposited plans, strata plans, architectural drawings and construction plans.

Working on active residential and construction sites has shown me that engineering quality depends not only on technical knowledge, but also on accuracy, professional accountability, communication, safety awareness and the ability to adapt to site conditions. These are qualities I aim to carry into my future career as a civil engineering professional.

Professional motivation and reflection

These refined responses develop the professional identity and motivation presented in my original portfolio draft.

What motivates me as an engineer?

I am motivated by work that combines technical analysis with practical outcomes. Civil engineering interests me because it shapes infrastructure, buildings and communities, while requiring engineers to balance design, construction, safety, sustainability and real site constraints. I want to contribute to projects where careful technical work leads to outcomes that can be seen and used in the real world.

How has professional experience shaped me?

Surveying has helped me understand the relationship between design information and physical construction. Through cadastral, detail, building, identification and set-out work, I have learned to collect reliable measurements, interpret plans, communicate site information and maintain accuracy under changing site conditions. This experience has made my university learning more practical and has strengthened my understanding of how different disciplines work together.

What qualities do I bring?

I bring a responsible approach to technical work, attention to detail, willingness to learn and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Balancing university study with professional surveying has also developed my time management, problem-solving and communication skills. I aim to continue improving these capabilities as I move into graduate engineering work.

Selected Project

Application of PLAXIS 2D for road embankment stability

Project purpose

The project investigated road embankment behaviour and compared stabilisation measures using PLAXIS 2D. The analysis considered pavement, subgrade and subsurface conditions and required the team to evaluate how different engineering approaches influenced embankment performance.

What I developed

The project strengthened my geotechnical modelling, engineering judgement, teamwork and technical communication. It also developed my ability to compare alternatives rather than rely on a single approach, and to communicate technical findings to an audience with different levels of engineering knowledge.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to apply for the Graduate Engineer position with Industrus Engineering. I am currently completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) at the University of Technology Sydney and have approximately one year of professional surveying experience with Pang Surveyors. My civil engineering education, practical site experience, technical problem-solving skills and willingness to learn provide a strong foundation for contributing to Industrus Engineering’s 12-month Graduate Program.

A commitment to ethical conduct and the highest standards of professional accountability

Professional accountability is essential in my current role as a Surveyor because survey information can directly influence property, construction and development work. I am responsible for collecting accurate measurements and maintaining reliable field records during cadastral, detail, building, identification and construction set-out surveys. I carefully operate total stations and GNSS equipment, check measurements and prepare clear field sketches, survey notes and records for later calculations and drafting. I also maintain site safety awareness and professional conduct on active construction and residential sites. This experience has taught me that accuracy, responsibility and ethical behaviour are essential when producing information that other professionals rely upon.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with engineers and stakeholders from different fields

My surveying work regularly requires communication with people involved in construction and property development. When undertaking surveys and construction set-out work, I need to understand project requirements, interpret architectural and construction information and communicate relevant survey information clearly. I use deposited plans, strata plans, architectural drawings and construction plans to determine the required fieldwork and support coordination on site. My university work has further developed this capability. During UTS Tech Fest, for example, I presented the methodology and findings of a road embankment stability project to an audience with different levels of technical knowledge. These experiences have strengthened my ability to explain technical information clearly and work effectively with people from different professional backgrounds.

The ability to engage with a creative, innovative and proactive environment

I have developed my ability to investigate alternative engineering solutions through university project work. During UTS Tech Fest, my team used PLAXIS 2D to analyse road embankment stability and compare different stabilisation approaches under varying pavement, subgrade and subsurface conditions. I used geotechnical modelling and engineering judgement to compare the behaviour of different solutions and worked with my peers to refine our analysis. Rather than relying on a single approach, we considered alternative options and their engineering implications before developing practical recommendations. This project strengthened my ability to think creatively, investigate technical problems proactively and adapt my approach in response to results.

Demonstrated ability to use and manage information

Accurate information management is a core part of my surveying role. Before fieldwork, I regularly interpret deposited plans, strata plans, architectural drawings, construction plans and other property information. During surveys, I collect field measurements using total stations and GNSS equipment and maintain detailed sketches, survey notes and measurement records. These records are then used for calculations, drafting and survey plan preparation. Through this process I have learned to collect, organise, interpret and communicate technical information accurately. My university studies have further developed these skills through technical reports, engineering analysis and the use of software including AutoCAD, PLAXIS 2D, MATLAB, HEC-HMS, SolidWorks and Microsoft Office.

The ability to manage my own performance in a professional environment

My role at Pang Surveyors requires me to work both independently and collaboratively across different residential and construction sites. Before leaving a site, I need to understand the survey requirements, prepare the correct equipment and information, complete accurate measurements and ensure that appropriate records have been collected. I also need to respond to different site conditions while maintaining accuracy, safety and professional communication. These responsibilities have strengthened my time management, attention to detail and ability to take ownership of my work. Balancing professional surveying with my Civil Engineering degree has also developed my ability to organise priorities and continually improve my technical knowledge.

A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and show leadership when required

Teamwork has been important throughout both my professional experience and university studies. At Pang Surveyors, I work independently when required while also collaborating with other surveyors and construction personnel to complete surveys accurately and efficiently. At university, I worked with peers during the UTS Tech Fest road embankment project to refine our PLAXIS 2D analysis and develop practical engineering solutions. I took responsibility for completing my technical work and contributing to the presentation of our findings. These experiences have taught me that effective teamwork requires accountability, clear communication, support for other team members and initiative when work needs to progress.

I am particularly attracted to Industrus Engineering because the Graduate Program offers structured technical and leadership development and exposure to a variety of consulting projects. The opportunity to rotate through project roles and contribute to infrastructure, sustainability and innovative engineering work would allow me to build on both my civil engineering education and practical surveying experience.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my suitability for the Industrus Engineering Graduate Program in an interview. I can be contacted by phone on 0415 303 661 or by email at svdragunovvv@gmail.com.

Best regards,
Pengyue Wu
